Thoracocentesis Cost In India
Thoracocentesis, also called a pleural tap, is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove excess fluid or air from the space between the lungs and the chest wall, known as the pleural cavity. This procedure is done either for diagnostic or for therapeutic purposes.
The excess fluid would have formed due to conditions like infections, a few cardiac conditions, and cancer. The thoracocentesis procedure is done by placing a small incision between the ribs; a thin catheter is carefully guided into the pleural space, and the fluid is then drained, often performed under ultrasound guidance. The collected fluid is commonly sent for laboratory analysis to identify infections, cancer, tuberculosis, or other underlying lung and pleural diseases.
Thoracocentesis is usually recommended when there is a condition called pleural effusion, where excess fluid builds up around the lungs and causes breathing discomfort. Thoracocentesis can be performed as both an elective and an emergency procedure, depending on the patient’s condition and the severity of symptoms. Thoracocentesis becomes an emergency when fluid or air accumulation severely affects breathing or causes respiratory distress. The cost of the thoracocentesis procedure depends on the type and complexity of thoracocentesis, which can significantly influence the overall cost of the procedure.
