Post-Operative Care of IUI Surgery
Although IUI is a non-surgical and minimally invasive fertility procedure, proper post-procedure care is important to support implantation and early pregnancy.
1. Immediate Rest After IUI
After the procedure, the patient is usually advised to lie down for 10–15 minutes. This helps with comfort and relaxation, though it does not affect sperm movement.
2. Activity and Lifestyle
Normal daily activities and work can be resumed the same day. However, it is advisable to avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or intense workouts for 24–48 hours to reduce uterine discomfort.
3. Medications
Doctors may prescribe progesterone or hormonal support medicines to help prepare the uterine lining for implantation. These medications should be taken exactly as advised and not stopped without medical guidance.
4. Diet and Hydration
A balanced, nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains is recommended. Adequate hydration helps maintain overall reproductive health. Smoking, alcohol, and excess caffeine should be avoided.
5. Mild Symptoms
Mild lower abdominal cramps, bloating, or light spotting may occur and are usually normal. However, severe pain, fever, foul discharge, or heavy bleeding should be reported immediately.
6. Sexual Activity
Depending on individual cases, the doctor may advise timed intercourse after IUI to increase pregnancy chances or temporary abstinence for a short period.
7. Emotional Well-Being
The two-week wait after IUI can be stressful. Practicing stress-reduction techniques, maintaining a positive mindset, and getting adequate sleep are beneficial.
8. Follow-Up and Pregnancy Testing
A pregnancy test is usually done 14 days after IUI. Blood tests or an ultrasound may be advised for confirmation. Regular follow-up appointments help monitor outcomes and plan further treatment if needed.
