Glucose Tolerance Test During Pregnancy (OGTT) Cost In India
Pregnancy brings several changes to the body, including changes in the way blood sugar is processed. Some women may develop high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, a condition known as gestational diabetes. An Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is commonly recommended during pregnancy to check how efficiently the body is managing glucose levels and to identify gestational diabetes at an early stage.
During the test, the patient is usually asked to arrive after fasting for several hours. An initial blood sample is collected to measure fasting blood sugar levels. After this, a glucose-rich drink containing a fixed amount of sugar is given. The body’s response to this glucose intake is then monitored through blood sugar measurements taken at specific time intervals.
In the 2-hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, blood sugar levels are commonly checked at fasting, after 1 hour, and again after 2 hours of consuming the glucose solution. This helps doctors assess whether the body is effectively controlling the sudden rise in blood sugar. If glucose levels remain elevated after two hours, it may indicate impaired glucose handling or gestational diabetes.
In the 3-hour Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, the evaluation is more detailed. Blood samples are collected while fasting and then at 1-hour, 2-hour, and 3-hour intervals after the glucose drink. This extended monitoring helps identify how long the blood sugar levels remain elevated and whether insulin is adequately bringing them back toward normal levels over time. The 3-hour test is usually recommended when initial screening results are borderline or when there is a higher risk of gestational diabetes.
