An Arteriovenous (AV) Graft is a surgically created vascular access used for hemodialysis, a treatment that helps remove waste products, toxins, and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are no longer able to perform these functions effectively. Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who require long-term dialysis need a dependable access point through which blood can be repeatedly withdrawn, filtered through the dialysis machine, and safely returned to the body. The procedure involves placing a soft, flexible synthetic tube, usually made of biocompatible material, beneath the skin to connect an artery to a nearby vein, most commonly in the arm. An AV graft is often recommended when immediate or relatively early dialysis access is needed, as it generally becomes usable within 2 to 4 weeks after placement, compared with an AV fistula, which may require several weeks or even months to mature. While AV grafts offer the advantage of quicker usability and predictable blood flow, they may have a slightly higher risk of complications such as infection, blood clot formation, narrowing (stenosis), or blockage over time. Because of this, patients are advised to maintain good hygiene, protect the graft arm from injury or excessive pressure, and attend regular follow-up appointments so the access can be monitored and treated promptly if any issues arise.
