Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) affects approximately 2.7 lakh people in India, with social stigma disproportionately impacting women. IBD, which includes conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, causes chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fatigue. Despite its prevalence, awareness remains low, and many patients face societal taboos that hinder open discussion and timely diagnosis. Women, in particular, experience greater challenges due to cultural stigmas surrounding digestive and bowel issues, often leading to delayed treatment and psychological distress.

Experts like Dr. G. R. Srinivas Rao says, The theme for IBD Awareness Day 2025, “IBD Has No Borders: Breaking Taboos, Talking About It,” emphasizes the need to educate the public, reduce stigma, and support affected individuals. Greater awareness and understanding can improve quality of life for patients and encourage early medical intervention, ultimately reducing the disease burden in India.
