What is a mammography test?

A mammography test is also known as a mastography. It is a common procedure that utilises low-energy X-Rays to evaluate the human breast for screening and diagnosis.

The purpose of a mammography test is to aid in the early detection of breast cancer. It is used in the detection of any lump, characteristic mass or microcalcification in the breast. In a mammography, two X-rays are obtained from each breast. The procedure will take about 10 minutes to complete.

Mammograms require very little radiation, which is well within acceptable limits. The advantages of mammography outweigh the minor risk of radiation exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a mammography test used for?

A mammography test is used for the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer. A screening mammography detects changes in the breast that might be malignant in persons who have no symptoms. A diagnostic mammography is used to look into abnormal breast changes such as a new breast lump, breast discomfort and odd skin appearance, among other symptoms.

How are the the results of a mammography test understood?

The BI-RADS assessment category, often known as a BI-RADS score, is used to describe mammography test results. The classifications range from 0 (incomplete) to 6 (proven cancer based on biopsy). Mammograms are graded on a scale of 1 to 5 (normal, benign, ambiguous, suggestive of cancer and malignant).

Why do I need a mammography?

You are advised to get a mammography test if you are at risk for developing breast cancer. Your physician may also recommend this test if they suspect breast cancer. An abnormal lump, drastic changes in your breast size, abnormal nipples, swelling in your breast, or pain in your breast are all signs that you should consider getting a test.

What happens during a mammography?

The mammography machine is made up of two flat plates. The patient's breast will be placed on the bottom plate. The compression plate, which is the upper plate, will drop onto the breast. The mammographer may advise the patient to take a deep breath. They will take multiple photographs of each breast throughout the screening process.

Is a mammography test painful?

The degree of discomfort during a mammography varies from patient to patient. Breast compression may cause discomfort for some women. This procedure only takes a few minutes, so the discomfort is temporary.

At what age should a woman get a mammogram?

The following are the American Cancer Society's guidelines on when to have a mammogram:

  • Women between the ages of 40 and 44 can begin yearly breast cancer screening.
  • Women between the ages of 45 and 54 should have a mammogram every year.
  • Women above the age of 55 should have mammograms every two years instead of every year.

Can a 20-year-old get a mammogram?

It is generally not recommended that women under 40 have screening mammograms. Those with genetic mutations can begin screening at 25, while women with a family history of breast cancer often begin screening 10 years before the first family member develops symptoms.

Are mammograms harmful?

A mammogram uses X-rays to produce breast images, so patients are exposed to small doses of  radiation. For the vast majority of women, the advantages of mammography outweigh the hazards of radiation exposure. Prenatal radiation exposure can result in birth defects. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid breast cancer screening.

Why is a mammography done after periods?

Mammograms should be scheduled one to two weeks after your period begins, since breasts can be painful during the week leading up to and during your period. We advise women not to use deodorant, powder, lotion or perfume on the day of their screening since these items could show up on the mammogram.

How long do mammography test results take?

The findings of a screening mammography are generally available within two weeks. If you are having a mammography as a follow-up test, the findings may be given to you before you leave the clinic. You may find out how long it will take to acquire results from your doctor or technician.
