Dengue IgG Test or Immunoglobulin G test is used for the detection of Dengue virus IgG antibodies. This test is usually used as a screening test and provides a preliminary test result to diagnose any previous or present infection with dengue viruses. Secondary dengue infections are characterised by high counts of IgG dengue virus antibodies. The levels rise around 7 days with a peak during the 2nd week. It remains in the blood for 90 days. But in some people, it may remain for the rest of their life. If IgG is positive and IgM is negative, this means that the person was infected with dengue in the past.

Generally, the Dengue IgG test is recommended to detect any secondary dengue infection and by the count of IgG antibodies. This test is recommended to persons with high fever or who have returned from an area where there is an outbreak of Dengue.Â
What happens during the Dengue IgG Test?
Dengue IgG is a blood test. This test usually involves drawing blood from a vein in your arm. Your pathology lab assistant will insert a needle into the skin to access the vein. This needle is usually connected to a syringe or a tube to collect the blood. This process usually takes 5 – 10 minutes.

You will need to take this test if you leave or recently travelled from a location where dengue is common and you have symptoms of dengue fever. If your doctor suspects a secondary dengue infection, you will be required to take this blood test.

Dengue IgG positive means IgG antibodies to Dengue fever virus are detected in your blood sample. This may indicate a past infection or a current one. You will need to take another test to confirm.
