A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a safe, quick, and non-invasive imaging test primarily used to measure bone mineral density (BMD). It helps in the early detection of osteopenia and osteoporosis, conditions in which bones become weak and more prone to fractures. The test uses very low-dose X-rays to assess bone strength, most commonly at the spine, hip, and sometimes the forearm. Because of its high accuracy and minimal radiation exposure, DEXA is considered the gold standard for evaluating bone health.
In addition to bone density assessment, a DEXA scan is also used for body composition analysis, providing detailed information about fat mass, lean muscle mass, and fat distribution in the body. Doctors often recommend this test for postmenopausal women, elderly individuals, patients on long-term steroid therapy, those with hormonal disorders, or people with unexplained fractures or bone pain. DEXA scan results help clinicians diagnose bone loss early, monitor response to treatment, and design personalised strategies to maintain bone strength and overall musculoskeletal health.
