FAQ’S
What kind of doctor does colon surgery?
A colorectal surgeon is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing and treating anorectal and colorectal problems (conditions of the colon, rectum and anus). They are often referred to as “proctologists” because of their additional training and skills in performing colorectal surgery, which allows us to treat their patients surgically if needed.
Who performs colon cancer surgery?
A surgical oncologist is a specialist who is experienced in performing surgery to remove the cancerous part of the colon and surrounding lymph nodes, followed by the reattachment of the healthy ends of the colon.
When should I see a colorectal surgeon?
Many people visit a colorectal surgeon for the first time when a primary care doctor or another physician identifies or suspects a more serious condition, such as colon polyps or incontinence. Patients with signs that may suggest a severe medical issue in the colon or rectum are often referred to colorectal surgeons for further examination.
The best way to minimise the risk of injury and other complications is to see a colorectal surgeon for early treatment or seek preventive care before severe intestinal issues arise.
How dangerous is colon surgery?
Like all other surgeries, bowel resections carry risks and potential complications during colon surgery. These include:
- Infection: It is possible that the surgical wound could become contaminated. Infections of the lungs or urinary tract are also possible.
- Injury: The intestines, bladder, or blood vessels near the bowels can be damaged during the operation.
- Leakage during the surgery: The colon may leak if the resection does not heal properly or becomes infected. This is referred to as an anastomotic leak. It can cause bleeding and infection, all of which are harmful. If a patient has any symptoms like stomach pain, headache, or a fast heart rate, call the doctor immediately.
- Hernia: This is a form of hernia that occurs when the abdominal wall is cut by the surgeon.
- Scar tissue: A scar tissue can form as the intestine heals. Over time, this can cause a blockage.
How long is colorectal surgery recovery?
After the surgery if a patient avoids heavy lifting or prolonged and intense activities, most people are back to normal activity within six to twelve weeks. Listen to your body. Do not put too much pressure on yourself and go through such severe pain after the surgery.
