Hypospadias: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation for Hypospadias 

Before a hypospadias repair, a surgeon will evaluate the general health, take vitals, and perform a physical examination of the penis. They will locate the opening, assess pee flow, determine curving, and, if necessary, perform a cystoscopy or urethrogram to identify any blockages.

During the procedure

A hypospadias repair is performed by a pediatric team, including a urologist, anesthesiologist, and nurse. The child receives general anesthesia. A section of the foreskin is used to lengthen the urethra, and a catheter is inserted to maintain shape and drain urine. Dissolvable stitches close the incisions, which dissolve within two weeks, ensuring the urethra remains intact and functional.

After the Hypospadias Surgery

After a hypospadias surgery, the surgeon secures the stent and sutures, and the child is sent to a recovery room for monitoring. The child can go home the same day they have surgery because the majority of hypospadias correction treatments are outpatient procedures.

Hypospadias Surgery Recovery

After hypospadias repair, children often feel tired and may spend more days sleeping, which aids their recovery. Recovery times vary, but swelling and bruising typically subside after two weeks, and in most cases, a complete recovery might take six weeks.

Post-procedure care

Post-surgical care includes:

• Medications are prescribed for discomfort.

• Clear liquids are advised initially, then a light diet as tolerated.
• Avoid strenuous activity and sports for at least 2 weeks.
• Limitation on regular baths until catheter removal, then switch to lukewarm soaks.
• Wound care is to be taken as instructed.

• Gentle cleaning is needed for the penis after dressing removal.
