What is Hypospadias Repair?
Hypospadias repair is a surgical procedure that corrects the position of the urethra on the penis. Hypospadias is a congenital condition where the urethra, or meatus, does not develop properly in the penis. In babies, hypospadias types include those near the penis head (subcoronal), along the penis shaft (midshaft), or where the penis and scrotum meet (penoscrotal). If a child has hypospadias, they may also have congenital penile curvature (chordee) and penoscrotal transposition, which may require correction by the surgeon. Surgeons typically recommend a hypospadias repair for children six months to two years after birth, but the decision lies with the parent.
Types of Hypospadias Repair
Hypospadias surgery types include:
- Single-stage repair: All aspects in one surgery.
- Two-stage repair: Straightening the penis and reconstructing the urethral opening.
A few techniques vary based on severity and available tissue, which include:
- Tip repair.
- Onlay graft.
- Oral mucosal graft (severe cases).
