Spinal cord damage is one of the primary causes of disability and persistent morbidity. High cervical spine injuries have the potential to be fatal and debilitating due to injury to several components, resulting in discoligamentous disruption, vascular insult, and spinal cord injury.
A spinal dislocation occurs when ligaments are overstretched or ruptured (torn), allowing the spine to move out of alignment or vertebrae to ‘lock’ over each other.
This can also result in a spinal cord injury. A dislocation is usually treated with traction or surgery to realign the vertebrae. A subluxation, also known as a partial dislocation, occurs when the joints at the back of the vertebrae become weak, often as a result of an injury to the muscles or ligaments in the spine, which causes the bones to move abnormally. In some cases, it can injure the spinal cord and necessitate spinal fusion to stabilize it.
Miss. N. Satya Alekhya of Abdullapur, Telangana, successfully underwent surgery at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad for traumatic C2-3, and C3-4 dislocations under the supervision of Dr. Venkata Ramakrishna T, Consultant Spine Surgeon.
