A pregnancy loss is defined as a clinically recognised pregnancy that ends involuntarily before 20 weeks. Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is the occurrence of three or more consecutive pregnancy losses.
The majority of miscarriages are a result of chromosomal errors, anatomical uterine defects, autoimmune disorders, and endometrial dysfunction, and the risk rises with the number of previous pregnancy losses. A thorough medical, surgical, family, and genetic history, as well as a physical examination, are used to make the diagnosis.
Tests may include karyotype analyses (of both partners), an antiphospholipid antibody test, an ultrasound, a saline ultrasound, a hysterosalpingogram X-ray, an MRI, and/or a hysteroscopy. Although available treatments target potential risk factors for pregnancy loss, the effectiveness of the medical interventions is dependent on individual factors.
