Lower Limb Angioplasty is done to treat pain experienced in the legs while walking due to peripheral arterial disease(blockage of arteries resulting in low blood supply). It is a minimally invasive procedure that helps in restoring the lumen of the vessel and allows adequate revascularisation. Later on, a stent is inserted to hold the blood vessel from further blockage.
The procedure begins with the patient receiving oral sedatives, followed by general anaesthetics. Then, a femoral or radial artery is incised, and a catheter is inserted through the incision and guided to the coronary artery’s base. A guidewire is inserted through the catheter to reach the site of the blood clot, and then the blocks are radiographed to pinpoint the location of the blood clot. The balloon is inflated and deflated repeatedly until normal blood flow is restored. The catheter is then retrieved after the stent has been stabilised.
The patient is advised to remain in bed for 12 to 24 hours following treatment. Aspirin is used to reduce the risk of thrombosis. It is advised to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as to maintain a healthy diet and engage in regular exercise. Mrs. E. Anjamma from Mahbubnagar underwent a Lower Limb Angioplasty Wound Debridement and SSG, under the supervision of Dr. Nishan Reddy B, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
