The subclavian artery is one of the largest arteries in the body that carries oxygenated blood to the chest and upper extremities. If the subclavian artery is ruptured, it can have serious consequences for the patient and the function of the organs that receive blood from it.
The patient had stab injuries in the chest, right side below the clavicle (collarbone), and another penetrating injury on the left side, resulting in a laceration(deep cut) in the left lung. The left side of the chest was opened, blood clots were removed, and the laceration was repaired by thoracotomy (a surgical procedure in which a cut is made between the ribs to reach the lungs or other organs). The laceration in the right subclavian artery and right axillary artery was repaired to restore circulation in the right upper limb.
The patient was monitored in the ICU for two days. Four days after the surgery, he was discharged from the hospital. The upper limb’s functioning is entirely reserved. For a speedy recovery and to prevent any complications, the patient is recommended not to skip any follow-up appointments.
Mr. P. Upender from Miryalaguda underwent surgical treatment for Subclavian Artery Trauma, under the supervision of Dr Nishan Reddy,Consultant Vascular, and Endovascular Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
