The axillary artery is the main artery that supplies blood to the upper limb. It is the extension of the subclavian artery that passes through the axilla to supply the limb. It is divided into three parts: the subscapular artery, the lateral humeral circumflex artery, and the medial circumflex artery.
When the axillary artery gets damaged by direct trauma from bone fracture fragments, blood perfusion to the axilla, thoracic wall, and upper limb gets obstructed, leading to impaired upper limb movement and excessive pain. The damage to the limb can be corrected by surgery and rarely requires amputation.Â
Bharat from Karnataka successfully underwent surgical repair of his damaged axillary artery at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr.Nishan Reddy B, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon.
