Diseases affecting the respiratory system which include pneumonia, tuberculosis, asthma, COPD and lung cancer constitute a major public health problem. The incidence of all these diseases is steadily on the rise due to changing life styles and increasing pollution. In, India approximately 10% of the population lives with debilitating diseases such as asthma or COPD. Similarly, in our country every year up to 3 million people acquire severe pneumonia and 2.7 million people develop pulmonary tuberculosis. There is an ever increasing need to improve the awareness of these common diseases and the approaches to treat them.

The first day was a hands-on-training-session on various interventional pulmonology procedures. It was attended by more than 150 pulmonologists across the country. Interventional Pulmonology is a new sub speciality in pulmonology which is rapidly gaining importance. With the advances in technology, it has become possible to accurately perform a biopsy in any part within the chest. It has also become possible to cure several diseases without an incision or by using minimally invasive techniques. Awareness and expertise in these techniques are still lacking. The delegates experienced the live workshop and underwent training in these techniques. Right from the basics of bronchoscopy to advanced procedures such as tracheal stenting, minirigid thoracoscopy and bronchial thermoplasty and bronchial cryotherapy were demonstrated on animal models by experts in their respective fields.

The department of interventional pulmonology at Yashoda Hospitals, Somajiguda lead by Dr. V. Nagarjuna Maturu is the most advanced in the twin states and has the entire range of equipment including cryotherapy, ultra-thin bronchoscopes, minirigid thoracoscopes, endobronchial ultrasound and bronchial thermoplasty. The team was the first to start both cryotherapy and thermoplasty in the state of Telangana. Bronchial thermoplasty is the latest addition to our set up and this dramatically improves asthma control in patients with refractory asthma by reducing the smooth muscle in the walls of the airway.Pulmo update 2018

The second day was a mega CME attended by around 500 pulmonologists from across the country. Pulmonology is one of the fastest growing specialities in medicine. Every year, new medicines are launched, newer diagnostic tests are approved and newer diseases are identified. It is very important for the training pulmonologists and those already practicing to be aware of these advances so that they can do the best for their patients. The event aimed to disseminate knowledge on the recent advances in the various fields of pulmonology. Advances related to common diseases like asthma, COPD, tuberculosis, Interstitial lung diseases and pleural diseases were all discussed.
