Acute Pain, Chronic Pain, and Neuropathic Pain

The spine is an important part of the human body. The spine’s strength and structure determines the flexibility and easy movement of the body. A weak spine means difficulty to stand, walk, sit and bend. A healthy spine is the only guarantee for an active life.

The spine protects the spinal cord, which is a column of nerves that connects the brain with the rest of the body. The brain and the spinal cord control movements of the body. A healthy spinal cord along with a strong spine helps the right functioning of all organs of the body.

The problems of spinal cord include, tumors, infections like meningitis and polio, inflammatory and auto immune diseases, and degenerative diseases. Spine diseases are evident as pain, numbness, loss of sensation, and muscle weakness. Treatments and therapies include medicines and surgery.

Acute Pain: Usually occurs for 3 to 6 months, caused by tissue damage. The pain is experienced as a paper cut to needle prick. In the extreme condition, the pain is close to touching a hot stove or iron, someone hitting with a hammer, and labour pains. When left unattended, the pain matures to become chronic.

Chronic Pain: Chronic pains are usually caused by degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis. Chronic pain of the spine may be due to failed surgery syndrome (continued pain after the surgery has completed healed), and fibromyalgia.

Neuropathic Pain: Even after the injury is treated and healed, the nerves continue to send pain messages to the brain; this type of condition is called as neuropathic pain. It is considered that, injury to the sensory or motor nerves in the peripheral nervous system can cause neuropathy.

Neuropathic pain is characterized by severe, sharp, lancinating, lightning-like, stabbing, burning, cold, and/or ongoing numbness, tingling or weakness.

It is not a rule that, acute pain patients will develop chronic pain also. Acute pain or chronic pain, treatments are usually focused at the cause of the pain. In addition to medications and surgery, spine pain is treated by custom back pain exercises and rehabilitation programs.
