The Cardiology and CT Surgery Department of Yashoda Group of Hospitals announces a path-breaking surgery (PTE) in collaboration with surgeons from the Duke University

Yashoda Group of Hospitals is proud to conduct Pulmonary Thrombo-Endarterectomy surgeries in collaboration with the following team of world renowned surgeons from Duke University Medical Center

Dr. Duane R Davis Jr.,
Director, Transplant Services,
Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Department,
Duke University Medical Center
MD, University of California, Los Angeles, USA

Dr. Duane R Davis completed his medical and surgical training in cardiothoracic surgery at UCLA and Duke University Hospitals. Thereafter, he developed the prestigious lung transplant program at Duke University Hospital. His interest in surgical treatment of Chronic Thrombo Embolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) led to the development of Pulmonary Thrombo-Endarterectomy (PTE) surgery program at Duke. His clinical and research interests include: Lung transplantation, Pulmonary Thormbo-Endarterectomies, Atrial-Fibrillation surgery, Chronic lung rejection with GERD and Xenotransplantation. His contributions in all these areas are significant.

Dr. Lankala Chandra Shekar Reddy,
Transplant Surgeon,
Cardiothoracic Surgery Department,
Duke University Medical Center
FRCS, United Kingdom; MD, Duke University, USA

Dr. Chandra Shekar Reddy completed his basic medical training in the Osmania Medical College, India. Thereafter, he went to United Kingdom for his general and cardiothoracic surgery training that lead to his Royal College Fellowship. Following his interest in thoracic transplantation, he moved to U.S.A and completed his transplant fellowship at Duke working with Dr. Davis. His clinical and research interests include: Lung transplantation, Pulmonary Thrombo- Endarterectomies, post operative Atrial fibrillation and surgical risk modeling. He made notable contributions in these areas with many presentations and publications.

Dr. Mark Stafford Smith
Director, Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia
Anesthesiology-Cardiac Department

Dr. Mark has keen research interests in the area of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. His primary focus of research is towards the understanding and prevention of acute kidney injury after cardiac and other major surgeries.

About Pulmonary Thrombo-Endarterectomy
Chronic Thrombo-Embolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) is a progressive disorder characterized by abnormal hypertension (high blood pressure) in the pulmonary artery due to obstruction by blood clots. Pulmonary Thrombo-Endarterectomy or PTE is the potential surgical cure and an established surgical procedure to remove clots and obstructive elements to restore blood flow in the lungs in patients suffering from CTEPH. The goal of this procedure is to reduce pulmonary artery pressure leading to improved lung and right heart function resulting in vastly improved survival in these patients. PTE surgery, in the ideal case, is completely curative. This initiative will bring hope to over 25, 000 patients suffering from CTEPH in India

As part of our mission to bring the latest in medical science and research to India, we are proud to announce our collaboration with surgeons from the prestigious Duke University to perform complex Pulmonary Thrombo-Endarterectomy (PTE) surgeries. This is the first collaboration of its kind to be forged by a healthcare group in India.

Eminent surgeons Dr. Duane R Davis Jr., Dr. Lankala Chandrashekar Reddy and Dr. Mark Stafford Smith from the world renowned Duke University Medical Center will be visiting our hospitals along with their expert surgical team to perform the PTE surgeries. The surgeries would be conducted at Yashoda Hospitals on 30th November and 1st December 2011.

Pulmonary Thrombo-Endarterectomy is a cutting-edge surgery that can offer a cure for patients suffering from Chronic Thrombo-Embolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH), a rare and a lethal condition. Our distinctive partnership with Duke University surgeons is part of our commitment to develop an in-depth understanding of this extremely complex surgery and provide CTEPH patients in India, a chance of improved survival. The transplant surgeons at Duke University Medical Center are pioneers in treating chronic thrombo- embolic disorders. Duke University Medical Center runs one of the largest PTE program in the United States treating several patients every year.

Very few centres in the world attempt this procedure. This deprives most CTEPH patients a chance for better survival. In addition, the existing treatment for CTEPH is heart-lung transplantation, which is currently not conducted in our country. Equipped with advanced technology, expertise and facilities, we are fortunate to offer this treatment to patients in India at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

As part of this initiative, we have selected a few patients suffering from CTEPH for Pulmonary Thrombo-Endarterectomy surgeries. These patients will be operated upon by cardiothoracic surgeons from Yashoda Hospitals in association with the distinguished surgeons from Duke University Medical Center. Should any of your patients show signs of Chronic Thrombo-Embolic Pulmonary Hypertension, please do reach out to the cardiac team at Yashoda Hospitals.
